Prizes were given to the top two teams out of the five that competed, chosen from a judge's panel of three Deloitte senior representatives and three University of Maryland faculty. The first place team received $500 while the second place team received $125.
The case asked teams to act as advisors to a newly appointed senior official of a struggling department within a company that sells insurance products.
"The purpose of this is to give the undergrad students a taste of what real client experience may be like," said Bobby Petrini, a Deloitte representative who put the event together.
"I'm expecting us to do well; a lot of those guys in there are really smart guys, they work very hard," said Evander Duck III, a member of the second place team, before the competition.
The competition lasted from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. when the winners were announced. Prior to announcing the winners, representatives from Deloitte asked for the students' feedback on the event. Comments ranged from thanking them for the opportunity to suggesting that next year's competition be moved to a less hectic week for students dealing with midterms.
At the end Duck and McCord were very pleased with how they performed and the results for the team. These sentiments were echoed by Petrini.
"I think it was a great event, we had some excellent presentations," said Petrini, "We were very pleased with what we saw from the Maryland students, and they should be very proud of that. "
