Dr. Borrut is probably one of the great prof.s I have had. Not only does he really know his field (early Islam), but he knows so much about the medieval period in general. Plus, he actually cares about his students and wants to see them succeed and develop their skills as historians. His class has been of great benefit to me.
Great prof.. But there is a lot of reading to the course, so if you wanted something that was light then this is not for you. A map quiz, Vocab quiz, paper, mid year exam and final are the projects in the class.
A intellectually challenging class. The prof. gives an early account of Islamic History trying to separate the religion from history. Encourages students to ask questions and gives a mid year exam, paper, 2 tests, and a final. There is so much reading in the class so make sure your ready, frankly its worth it especially with the knowledge you get.
Borrut courses with passion about medieval Islamic history, culture, and politics. He walks the fine line between the history and the religion but always remains an historiographer. If you want to learn something about the early Islamic period, he's the guy. Tons of reading, but worth it to be prepared in his class to get the most out of it. |
