Global Business Society

"Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover," Mark Twain wrote. The latter half of
that quote is posted on the Global Business Society's website, a growing club within the Robert H. Smith
School of Business.

The club's mission is to help students discover opportunities to study and intern abroad, and develop
careers in international business, said sophomore Co-President Shirley Qin.

"Once you graduate, you won't magically get a really great job in some country," Qin said, "We can
point you in the right direction."

Qin, who joined the club as a freshman, interned in Shanghai last summer.

"It was fantastic," she said. "It was a completely new experience."

Qin said that being a member of GBS was a big part in her internship's success, because she could talk to
other club members who had been abroad in that area.

The club started small, but has since grown to almost 50 regular members, and the attendance at events
has also grown, Qin said.

The club has a broad focus on business that makes it accessible to students in different majors, and as
well as students outside of the Smith school.

Vice President Molly Bumbera is a government and politics major applying to the Smith School to pursue
accounting and possibly international business.

Bumbera said she joined the club last year because of the insight it gave into international business, and
because she thought it would help her get internships in the field.

"[GBS] helped me learn about things I otherwise would not have known," Bumbera said.

The club has been working on starting a scholarship of around $200 dollars to be given to a selected
GBS member. Qin says she hopes to have the scholarship in place by the end of this semester, and the
scholarship money will hopefully be used to help cover the expenses of traveling abroad.

The club also has some upcoming events planned. On Wednesday Feb. 16, GBS will be hosting an
International Law Forum with Dr. Leigh Anenson in Van Munching Hall. The following Thursday, Feb.
24, they will be sponsoring an Islamic Finance Symposium in Frank Hall, along with the Muslim Student
Association.

The club meets every other Tuesday. For more information, email the club at Globalterps@gmail.com,
