Nokia adopts platform for Microsoft's smartphone, but may fail to grab market share
Android and Apple may dominate market when Nokia-Microsoft transition is complete
Nokia has acquired the model for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 to create a new smart phone, according to a press release by the CEOs of Nokia and Microsoft.
Nokia previously used Symbian as its software platform for smart phones but announced its switch to the Windows Phone 7 platform in February.
In a financial form filed in March, it says that Nokia's transition to Windows Phone 7 will take two years.
Blogger Preston Galla thinks this could harm the future smart phone. "By that time, the iPhone and Android could have the market sewn up," he wrote on the blog Computerworld.com.
University of Maryland students Krista Babyak and Shannon Coveney don't believe that Nokia is popular among college students. The two sophomores have never owned a Nokia and don't know anyone who currently owns one.
"I've only seen Nokia on commercials before," said Coveney.
When asked about Windows Phone 7, neither had heard about the Microsoft product.
