Urban Cartel, an urban rock group, is one step closer to opening the University of Maryland's Art Attack after winning Wednesday night's Battle of the Bands, which is put on by Student Entertainment Events.

"We're really excited to be a contender….we only do this for the fun and enjoyment," said Teddy Atkins, a UMD alum and the "lead mic" and rapper for the group.

Eight student bands are competing in this year's Battle of the Bands. The first four bands that played last night included Urban Cartel, Aperis, Scatterpoint, and last year's winner, Ivy Rose. The competition took place in the Baltimore Room of the Stamp Student Union, which was almost full with students, fans, and parents.

Each band was given three songs to prove themselves worthy to the judges and the crowd. The eight bands competing in SEE's Battle of the Bands were chosen out of a group of 24 after sending in a 3-song demo tape.

Wednesday's show displayed a talented and diverse group of bands that exist at the University of Maryland, but Urban Cartel was the judges' favorite. The judges are made up of a number of SEE directors who rank the bands based on categories such as uniqueness, crowd interaction, and general appeal.

"I was impressed with all the bands tonight. Urban Cartel had a very unique sound and I'm looking forward to hearing more from them," said judge and incoming SEE Musical Arts Director Keira Zitelman.

Urban Cartel is hard to define by one genre and had a dynamic appearance on stage. Their music is a fusion of rap, hip-hop, rock, and pop that's appealing to all different kinds of listeners.

Urban Cartel began in Elkton Hall about two years ago, when three of the members would make interpretive music in their hall.
