SUSA Activity Fair Aims to Keep Students Involved

Clubs at the SUSA Activity Fair last week came equipped to capture the attention of
students through free food, music and several other giveaways.
"This event brings in more people than any other," said Casey Engle, Vice President
of Finance of the Global Business Society. "We have a lot more kids show up at the first
meeting because of this event."
For most clubs however, the issue is not attracting students to the first meeting but
keeping membership consistent. Recently, SUSA clubs have seen a decline in student
involvement.
"It is partly due to budget cuts," said Prannoy Nambiar, co-president of the
Maryland Music Business Society, whose club was giving away free CDs at the fair. "Getting
money for clubs has become harder, making it more challenging for clubs to hold
interesting events."
Others said that it was more about keeping the students motivated to attend
meetings throughout the semester.
"If you add a value to membership, then it will keep students returning each week,"
said Vidya Sathyamoorthy, President of the American Marketing Association.
According to Austin Gambino, Vice President of the American Marketing
Association, it takes a lot more than the fair to keep students interested in their clubs.
"Innovation is a big part of it," he said. "If you went to dorms and into dining halls
spreading the word about your club, you will gain a lot more attention."
Some clubs have created different systems that keep kids coming every week. "We
have a point system rewarding kids for good attendance," said Brittany Smith, co-president
of the International Economics and Financial Society. "We also try to get the most
interesting speakers to come to our meetings."
SUSA also has a similar point system for the clubs. "We have a new point system.
Clubs will not get their first pick of rooms if they do not keep attendance up," said Karen Qi,
the social programming chair of SUSA.
Other clubs, however, said that they have not had problems keeping students
involved and motivated throughout the semester.
"My club is a little bit different. Students have a need and we answer that need,"
said Martinas Dapkyavichus, president of the Community of Aspiring Shareholders. "Our
club covers a larger range and has a real world application."
