Club Championship inspires students to network with recruiters
The Business Golf Club held its third annual Club Championship at the University of Maryland Golf Course on Friday, April 13.
Rather than focusing on the sport of golf, the championship was a professional networking opportunity for members.
"It's more of a relaxed, informal way to meet a recruiter," said Chris Waddail, sophomore accounting major.
The event brings employees from different accounting and business firms, like McGladrey and KPMG, for a three-hour game with students. Three students were paired up with every recruiter.
The event gave students a chance to get to know a recruiter outside of the career fair setting. The club designed it to be more casual, yet effective, way for students to network.
"[Students are] able to network in a unique setting," said Ben Becker, co-President and senior accounting and finance double major. "It's an easy way to get into it."
The setting of the event allowed students to stand out, Becker said, because they each received personal time with a recruiter.
Some members have been successful at past events; last year, Waddail met a recruiter from McGladrey, leading him to obtain an externship the following year. The same company also offered an internship to Becker after recruiters played with him in the championship.
