Alpha Kappa Psi holds second annual career day
Employers from the consulting firms Censeo, Deloitte Consulting, IBM, KPMG, McGladrey and PricewaterhouseCoopers attended Alpha Kappa Psi's (AKP) second annual consulting career day Sept. 23 in the Van Munching lobby. Consulting Career Day was composed of three parts: a student welcome and employer panel discussion, a case interview workshop and a daylong fair.
Event manager and AKP brother Stephanie Johnson , a junior finance and supply chain major, joined forces with UMD alum Ben Kubic for the second time to create the career day. Kubic now works for Deloitte, which headlined the event. "Before Ben, Smith hasn't had an event just for consulting," Johnson said.
The panel discussion intended to educate students about what a consulting career entails. According Johnson, the panel is an educational opportunity for students. "We want to give students an idea of what consulting really is through the panel discussion," Johnson said.
Deloitte Consulting sponsored a case interview workshop. In addition to behavioral interviews, students must go through case interviews that test their previous business knowledge, according to Johnson. "It really tests problem solving," she said. "It's the most intimidating part."
AKP brother Harluxsh Gill, a junior economics major, arranged to have firms come to the Smith school. At the general fair, each firm had booths and representatives. Students presented their resumes and received job opportunities. Gill contacted many UMD alumni who ended up working with firms such as Deloitte early this summer. "I'm the bridge between the employers and students for this event," he said.
According to Gill, Consulting Career Day is a key event for AKP. However, the fraternity holds eight to 10 events per semester. Johnson credits the AKP and faculty for the success of the event. "We had so much support," she said. "Eighty percent of our brothers are attending the event."
