Don't take the class unless you're an ANTH major. He treats it as if his is the only class you're taking for the whole semester. He rambles on and on about nothing and then assigns 25-30 page research papers, and then expects everyone, if your an ANTH major or not to know exactly what to do and changes what he says all the time.
I was looking forward to this class but was highly unimpressed after the first week. Stuart rambles on about personal stories that have nothing to do with the course. Lecture was completely pointless. Still managed to get an A in the class while difficultly going to lecture. Read the book, go to discussion and do the projects and you will be fine.
He truly cares about his students, even though it was a class of over a hundred kids. He even called me to make sure my exam rescheduling went alright. He works very difficult to answer all questions adequately. Rants do occur, but it's refreshing as others have said. Dry sections like every class, but overall fun and everyone can find a topic to like.
I really enjoyed this class. Lecture was fascinating. I thought his stories were refreshing as opposed to listening to him lecture non-stop on anthropology. I passed with either a high B or a low A and I never studied because he repeats things often in class. Do the reading, pay attention in lecture, do the projects and you'll be fine.
He does tell stories in lecture, but that's the great part! Honestly, his courses are a friendly break from dry prof.s. He does cover material while speaking and the TA's clarify any questions you have. They also write the exams- not too tough. Fall 2010: 3 exams, 3 projects, and a final. The readings are reasonable and one can glance over handouts.
prof. Stuart teaches nothing. He rambles incessantly. He assigns readings but doesn't lecture on them. When you speak to him privately, he is simply rude. Unless you are an Anth major who is a fountain of knowledge about religion, do not take this class. He wants you to participate but he talks about things that students know nothing about.
Long-winded but humorous. He's yet another example of a UMD prof. that talks a lot but doesn't actually say anything. Don't bother attending courses, just read the handouts and go to discussions; you can get an simple A that way. Attendance is taken but it's not mandatory.
Dr Stewart is very intelligent and has travelled all over the world and has amazing stories. However, the class itself seems to be lacking in structure. He talks about all friendlys of crazy things at all different times until you just become lost. |
