Thursday Night
Deloitte Consulting and SSWS's event

Thursday night, I happened to have an epiphany about what I might do with my Information Systems major when I graduate in a few years. Believe it or not, this epiphany wasn't brought on by a typical Thursday night on Route 1. It all started when I was walking to my accounting class a couple of days before when I saw a flyer posted up in Van Munching advertising the Deloitte Consulting information session hosted by the Smith School Women's Society. If you know me, you know that I will do anything to procrastinate studying for an exam, so of course I planned to go to this information session. Little did I know that going there would make a world of difference to my future.
Deloitte Consulting had sent effective and enthusiastic employees to talk about their firm, what consulting means, and how to get started with their company. Consulting at Deloitte seems like a perfect job for those who like to advise people on how to solve a problem and come up with brilliant solutions to suit their clients' needs. Consulting entails doing something worthwhile and helping people; one employee said that she goes home, she feels as though she has made a difference. Additionally, most jobs in the realm of consulting offer excellent compensation. Just as I was starting to think that a challenging and rewarding career in consulting sounded pretty good, they explained that at Deloitte Consulting you work with a team of people (often with senior members) and you get to travel. For a person like me who dreads heading out to the "real world" because it could mean sitting in a lonely cubicle, that was the icing on top of the cake.
Who wouldn't want a job creating smart solutions to many different problems (keeping the job from becoming monotonous), where there is opportunity to travel (always interesting), and where you get to work with and meet lots of talented people? Well, maybe the women out there who are worried about juggling a family and all the work, but Deloitte seemed to have an answer to that problem as well. They have a large women's group called WIN for support on the work/life balance. The company has "give back" programs where you are not only assisting your clients but also the community, if you wish to do so, and they have great flexibility when it comes to new employees juggling graduate schooling and work. It's safe to say, I was pretty impressed and very excited that I finally found something that sounded like a good fit for my personality. I just happened to have stumbled on to this by looking at one of the bulletin boards in Van Munching Hall, taking a chance and going to a seminar. Imagine what you could stumble upon if you actually checked out all of the opportunities that the Smith School has to offer its students. So next time you are walking through Van Munching, stop at a bulletin board or kiosk or get online to check out something new… maybe it will inspire you.
