Smith students look forward to SUSA New York Trip

The Smith Undergraduate Student Association (SUSA) will once again be offering its annual trip to New York, providing undergraduate business students with an opportunity to network with young Smith alumni and prospective employers, visit some of the top companies in the city, and meet other undergraduates with similar interests.

The trip, which is open to all undergraduate students, will take place from Thursday, Oct. 20 to Friday, Oct. 21.  Students will choose from five different tracks – Accounting, Entertainment, Finance, Consulting and Marketing – that determine the types of companies they will be visiting during the trip.

According to SUSA Vice President of Events Falin Patel, students who attend the trip will get to enjoy ample time in the city while also receiving the chance to connect with important contacts for the future.  "It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students to explore the various opportunities NYC has to offer in their academic fields that they would not otherwise get," he said.

Patel added that despite the national recognition that the University of Maryland and Smith School receive, a lot of New York business recruiting is still limited, and the trip has the potential to open a door for students whom these businesses may have never considered before.

The agenda for Thursday includes an Alumni Panel and Networking Reception at a restaurant in Midtown Manhattan in which students will have the opportunity to connect with Smith alumni who now hold a variety of positions in the New York area.

On Friday, students will separate into their five tracks and spend the day touring and visiting different companies throughout the city.  They will receive their own metro cards in order to travel to the companies on the subway.

Junior finance and marketing major Adam Janov said the trip appears to be an excellent opportunity to learn about the different fields and expand his network of contacts.

"As a finance and marketing double major, this trip sounds like a great experience to find out more about possible career options and to better prepare myself for the future," he said.
