Business Golf Club's sees great turnout for Range Invitational
More than 30 students spent Thursday evening honing golf skills and hitting some balls for free as the sun set over the University of Maryland golf course.
The Business Club's Range Invitational in an important event to the club, and had a great turn-out Thursday Sept. 29. Co-President Ben Becker, a senior biology major, says the Invitational is a recruiting event for players of all skill levels, but aims at helping beginners "get confidence on the course".
"It's really hard to go out on the course and learn pace of play," says Vice President of Events Alex Blum, a junior Accounting & Finance major. "That's what this event is all about."
Attendees are lent golf clubs, get group lessons and hit golf balls, all for free. Students of all majors, skill levels, and degree levels were welcome to get their group lesson from the course's head professional Jeff Maynor.
Though the Business Golf Club is geared to prepare members to play with employers throughout their career, diversity among majors is important, as is having a good time. Blum, Becker, and fellow co-president Marc Russo, a senior Accounting & Finance major, all agree "it's a lot of fun".
The Invitational is just one of the club's exciting events, with another quickly approaching. The Club Championship, which should be at the end of October, allows students to be put into foursomes with recruiters and employers from finance firms for 5 to 6 hours. There are even more networking opportunities at the subsequent banquet, where you can meet other connections that you did not have to luxury to play 18 holes with.
Along with being social, networking, and getting comfortable on the golf course, members also get substantial discounts at the course. Club members only pay $20 to drive and $15 to walk on weekends after 12 p.m., which is only half of the student weekend rate. Members also get a discount on range balls and the Pro Shop, not to mention opportunities for various clinics and outings.
The next event for the club is their Club Tournament on Oct. 7. For more information on the Business Golf Club, please refer to their website at www.umdbusinessgolfclub.com or follow them on Twitter at @umdbusinessgolf.
