The Robert H. Smith School of Business welcomed high-schoolers from across Prince George's County for the school's eighth Finance Field Day on Friday, April 15, 2011.

Students from Eleanor Roosevelt, Suitland, Fairmont Heights, Largo, Northwestern, Charles Herbert Flowers, Bladensburg and Potomac High Schools sent a combined total of 140 students to the event, which was a sanctioned school field trip.

All the students in attendance were National Academy of Finance scholars.

"It's a high-school program where students take some college courses in high-school, accounting especially," said Pat Cleveland, assistant dean for the undergraduate program at the Smith School.

According to Cleveland, the National Academy of Finance collaborates with the eight public high schools to put on various types of educational programs, all with some unifying theme around finance and accounting, which are two of the Smith School's largest majors.

"It's a wonderful opportunity while you are in high-school. The students usually have an internship, travel to the New York stock exchange," said Cleveland.

With the competitive edge you need to apply for the Smith School being common knowledge amongst many high school students, Cleveland said, "events like this makes it a little less scary to apply."

The event ran from 10 a.m. to around 2:45 p.m. with Charles LaHaie, Marie Accius and Mary Ajetunmobi as the main presenters. Lunch was provided for the students as well.

The partnership between the Smith School and the National Academy of Finance is part of the Smith School's STARS (Smith Talent Acquisition and Referral System) program outreach to area high schools.

According to Cleveland, The STARS program works on campus to help develop underrepresented students, to encourage them and attract them to the study of business.

"Our rationale for bringing them here is that we really want to recruit with diversity in mind,  Cleveland explained.
