Will Wellein graduated the R.H. Smith School of Business in May 2009 with a degree in Finance. While at the University of Maryland, Wellein was involved in the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and the Sports Management Fellows Program at the Smith School. Wellein currently works as a Global Equity Mutual Fund Accountant at T. Rowe Price in Baltimore, Maryland.

  1. How do you think Smith best prepared you for working at T. Rowe Price now?

During my experience at Smith, I learned to work both individually and as a member of a larger team for several group projects each semester. By doing so, I was able to hone some of my major skills that are essential for success in the real world. Effective communication, time management, and efficiency are crucial to any job, and I am confident that my time at Smith allowed me to work on each of those skills day in and day out in preparation for the next steps in my career. Additionally, I really learned a great deal from the many wonderful professors that bring diverse professional experiences to the classroom.

  1. Who would you consider the most influential Professor you had?

I would say that Azi Gera (who earned his PhD in Spring 2009 and now teaches at Drexel University) was the most influential professor I had. Azi, my professor for BMGT 495 Business Policies, taught me to think outside of the box using a careful thought process. He never accepts "no" as an answer and constantly challenges his students to look at every aspect of a situation in order to draw conclusions. His method of teaching by using examples rather than straight lecturing made each class both entertaining and engaging.

  1. What is the most important piece of advice you would give current Smith students?

I would tell current Smith students to take advantage of the array of opportunities that are offered to all students during their time in the Business School. There are so many different course options and extracurricular activities that it is almost impossible not to find something you are passionate about either academically or personally. I am an avid sports fan and was able to combine my passion for sports with my interest in business by taking part in the Sports Management Fellows program. I am very grateful for the opportunity to take part in such a program, and it was a great way to expand upon my Smith experience.
