KPMG visits campus to discuss pending SEC regulations

The Accounting and Business Association hosted another high profile firm at their meeting last week as representatives from KPMG, one of the world’s largest professional service consultants, spoke to ABA members and Smith school students.

Visitors to the event packed into room 1202 in Van Munching Hall last Tuesday to hear the representatives speak.  The event became crowded very quickly; many visitors were forced to stand along the edges of the room as the seats were snatched up early before the meeting.

Terry Innanconn, a member of KPMG’s Department of Professional Practice spoke for a majority of the hour-long meeting.  Innanconn, who used to work in the Securities and Exchange Commission, talked about changes occurring within the SEC.  The SEC is planning on making some large announcements over the course of the year, including rules regarding companies that do not follow GAAP rules, such as international firms operating branches within U.S.borders. They are also planning on addressing cyber security and the risks it holds to companies.  Under the new rules, companies would be forced to admit how often hackers try to crack the company’s firewalls and other digital defenses.

Many of the visitors and ABA members found the session to be very informative.

“I think she did a great job of connecting what she was talking about to current events.” said freshman finance and math double major Anastasiya Belyaeva.
