Jaguar Land Rover has requested permission from Chinese regulatory authorities to build a factory in Changshu, a city near Shanghai. The company will be making a joint venture with Chinese luxury car manufacturer Chery to acquire a factory.
Jaguar Land Rover, a British car manufacturer owned by Tata motors in India, is looking to expand their market into China. China is quickly becoming a large market for luxury cars; luxury car manufacturers including Buick and Cadillac have experienced massive sales numbers in China.
Due to the increasing presence of foreign car manufacturers in China, the Chinese government has been reluctant to give permission to foreign car companies to establish plants and dealerships. Foreign cars are outselling domestic cars manufactured by Chinese carmakers.
Jaguar Land Rover hopes to gain the Chinese government’s approval by participating in a joint venture with domestic car manufacturer Chery. It is currently unknown whether Jaguar Land Rover will build their own manufacturing plant in China or share one of Chery’s existing factories.
