iPhone 5 hits shelves, disappoints on its new Maps

The release of Apple’s newest product brought with it a new generation – the sixth generation iPhone 5.

Not surprisingly, the iPhone broke sales records with more than two million pre-orders in the first 24 hours, according to Apple Press Information.

“iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do,” said Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Philip Schiller, in a news statement on Sept. 17, 2012. Due to the high demand, Apple continued taking pre-orders in early September that would not ship until October.

Advertisements for the iPhone 5 highlighted a faster processor, 4G LTE capability, Retina display technology and a thinner and lighter model, according to Consumer Reports.

Michael King, junior journalism major, preordered the phone as soon as it was available and received it on Sept. 21, the first day it was out.

“I had the phone as soon as you could possibly have it. It’s definitely a huge improvement over the iPhone 4, and I don’t want to disregard all of the improvements Apple made, but the Maps change is definitely a problem,” he said.

Now, King is not the only customer to notice this issue. There is even a tumblr page, titled “The Amazing iOS 6 Maps,” which allows Maps users post pictures of the amusing and inaccurate routes provided.

Apple switched to its own mapping software from Google, which had been used since the first iPhone in 2007. While some customers are outraged by the seemingly rushed-to-market iPhone 5, others are completely satisfied.

“I love it! The screen is really big, the colors are really bright and it’s really light,” said sophomore communications major Melanie Levy, who also pre-ordered the phone.

When asked if she saw any problems with the phone, Levy replied, “Well it froze once, but that just happens with all iPhones.”

So, was the iPhone 5 release a wild success or a product not ready for the market? You just might have to decide for yourself.
