McDonald’s will hire 50,000 new employees in one day on April 19th, it’s first ever “National Hiring Day”. They will be hiring for part-time and full-time positions, as well as both crew and management positions. The company is looking to add staff as business improves and more restaurants are staying open 24 hours a day.
“I think it tells a lot about McDonald’s and what kind of company it is. They don’t discriminate, and they want to help the people,” said freshman Reeya Shaw who worked for McDonald’s a few years ago.
McDonald’s is trying to rid the notion that its jobs — referred to as “McJobs” — are dead-end jobs that don’t go anywhere.
“A McJob is one with career growth and endless possibilities,” the company said in a statement.
The current president of McDonald’s U.S.A, Jan Fields, started working at McDonald’s as a behind the counter crew member in 1978.
“It definitely isn’t a dead end job. When I worked there I was only 15, but there was talk that if I continued with the store for a couple years, they would have made me a manager,” said Shaw.
The average pay for the job is $8.30 an hour, compared to the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. Restaurant managers make $50,000 a year. People can apply in stores or online.
“The national hiring day thing is a great marketing tool…plus it’s going to give a lot of people a job which many people have been struggling to find,” said sophomore Rachel Friedman.
