New SUSA President Unveils Semester Goals

New Smith Undergraduate Student Association (SUSA) President Brian Doyle says
giving back to students and raising SUSA’s profile are at the top of his agenda this semester,
along with improving the way SUSA’s leadership interacts with the 24 clubs it oversees.
“A lot of students don’t even know what the acronym SUSA stands for, and I want to
fix that,” Doyle said.
Part of this effort will include reaching out to underclassmen, a group Doyle says he
would like to see more involved. To this end, he plans to hold an event in the Cambridge
Community Center – which he hopes will be more convenient for underclassmen than Van
Munching Hall – within the next two weeks. Doyle also hopes to have a representative
from each club present at the event.
A new policy being enacted is for SUSA leadership to have office hours to make it
easier for students to contact SUSA members with questions and concerns. Doyle plans to
have office hours for all five of the executive board members, the new student involvement
chair and each of the representatives of the 8 majors, which he says should be posted in the
next week.
Also on Doyle’s agenda is taking the social gatherings held each semester to a new
level. Every semester, each class representative holds an event for his or her class, which
has traditionally been a catered social located on campus.
“I want to utilize D.C. and Baltimore,” says Doyle. “If the freshman class wants to go
to a Nationals game, SUSA will look into sponsoring that.” Doyle hopes this upgrade will
help SUSA give back to the students it works for.
Doyle will also be increasing the level of interaction between SUSA’s leadership and
its clubs by assigning each executive board member several clubs to monitor and oversee.
The board members will be expected to attend at least one meeting a semester for each of
the clubs they are assigned to. In addition, Doyle would like to have SUSA co-sponsor some
events with individual clubs.
“I want to do more for the students, because that is who I am here to serve,” he said.
