Preparations are underway for the Smith Undergraduate Student Association’s annual Business Week, which will take place Sept. 13 to 17.
The week will comprise a variety of events intended to assist students in areas such as dressing properly in a business setting and networking effectively with alumni and corporate representatives.
Coming up this week
The week will kick off with a presentation and discussion with Mechai Viravaidya, an entrepreneur from Thailand. Viravaidya – commonly known as the “Condom King” – became famous for his unique business practices, which aimed to increase family planning and safe sex practices in Thailand.
“The aim is to showcase everything we have in SUSA – we try to highlight what we offer. We try to find something everyone would be interested in,” SUSA President Chris Coraggio said.
Steve Jain, president of the Business and Information Technology Society (BITS), urged students who have never attended Business Week to come with an open mind.
“Don’t discount the value of anything because it doesn’t look interesting,” he said. “Get as much exposure to as many different areas, so you have a better idea of what you might like.”
Time to Network
The final event of the week will be a career fair where students can network with representatives from companies across the country.
Coraggio added that freshmen have the most unique networking opportunity of all.
He said, “One really important thing for freshmen is to start networking – not just with other freshmen, but with older students who have their own personal networks.”
